Fasting is not something that’s talked about much these days. I was once at a Pastor’s Convention where I heard a Pastor say: “If you want to know why we don’t hear much preaching about fasting these days, look over at the fat preacher next to you.” WOW. Yet, the entire Bible is full of examples and commands to make fasting AND prayer a part of our lives on a consistent basis! When Jesus taught on prayer in Matthew 6:1-18, it’s obvious He held the practice of fasting on even ground with prayer. Just as He said: “When you pray, pray like this,” Jesus also said: “When you fast, fast like this…”. Jesus didn’t say “IF “you pray and “IF” you fast. He said “WHEN!”
However, we can perform the “religious practice” of fasting and gain no spiritual benefit whatsoever! If we fast with the wrong motivations: to be noticed by others, or seek to manipulate God; or if we don’t take the time and energy we would spend on food, and focus it on God, we will miss out on what God wants to do in and through us when we fast!
Isaiah 58 also teaches that are hearts need to be soft and repentant when we fast. Our love for people must not waver when we fast. If we are mean as a snake while we’re fasting, then we defeat the purpose! Look what God says:
Isaiah 58:3-9 (NLT) 3‘We have fasted before you!’ they say. ‘Why aren’t you impressed? We have done much penance, and you don’t even notice it!’” I will tell you why! It’s because you are living for yourselves even while you are fasting. You keep right on oppressing your workers. 4What good is fasting when you keep on fighting and quarreling? This kind of fasting will never get you anywhere with me. 5You humble yourselves by going through the motions of penance, bowing your heads like a blade of grass in the wind. You dress in sackcloth and cover yourselves with ashes. Is this what you call fasting? Do you really think this will please the LORD? 6“No, the kind of fasting I want calls you to free those who are wrongly imprisoned and to stop oppressing those who work for you. Treat them fairly and give them what they earn. 7I want you to share your food with the hungry and to welcome poor wanderers into your homes. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help. 8“If you do these things, your salvation will come like the dawn. Yes, your healing will come quickly. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the LORD will protect you from behind. 9Then when you call, the LORD will answer. ‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply.
What God wants at the end of the day is our heart! Fasting is a means of getting us to that point, as we humble ourselves before Him! It is a way of breaking down our pride, arrogance, and healing us of our spiritual apathy!
Today are you willing to give God all of your heart? And then watch Him do a miracle in response?
