You ever had that feeling like God MIGHT be speaking to you, but you're not sure? I haven't figured out all the ways God speaks to me. I've never had God speak to me in an audible voice or write things on the wall for me. But God DOES speak to me! Sometimes He's very quiet. Sometimes, He's very loud. In fact, I am learning a little better each day how to discern His voices from all of the other voices in and around my life that are screaming at me! When God called Samuel into service for Him, Samuel wasn't at first sure that it was God who had been speaking. The first three times God called Him, he mistook God's voice for Eli's voice! Don't know how that could happen, but it did. Finally, Eli helped Samuel posture Himself to receive God's call on his life:
"The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, 'Samuel! Samuel!' Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:10
Sameuel finally got it right. When He finally began to understand it was GOD who might be speaking to Him, He made several key decisions:
- He remained still and waited on the LORD to speak to Him again.
- He tuned His ears toward God.
- When he sensed God speaking again, He responded with complete surrender! "Your SERVANT is listening!"
God is trying to speak to us. If we're not hearing, it's due to several possible reasons:
- There's unconfessed and unsurrendered sin in our lives.
- We're not expecting God to speak to us.
- We're not asking God to speak to us.
- We're distracted by all the other voices in and around us.
- God knows we're not yet willing to do what He wants to tell us to do!
Today, would you be willing to be still for long enough and tune your ears for long enough to listen for God's voice? If you will, God WILL speak!
Then, when you sense He might be speaking to you, here's how you respond:
"Speak, LORD, for your SERVANT is LISTENING!"
